Ah, Omega-3… The unsung hero of supplements.
Omega-3 has the unfortunate attribute of being the supplement you buy when you are looking for something to push your cart over £50 to bag free delivery.
And in a world where shady preworkouts make claims about “splitting your skin” and “a pump so severe you get arrested for it”, a gold pill with the all the hype of Mr. Bean stands no chance.
It’s the supplement equivalent of being late to a Nickelback concert – it doesn’t matter, you still shouldn’t be there.
Of course, this shouldn’t be the case.
Because under their gold, squishy exterior there are a wealth of benefits which are useful for improving muscle building and fat loss.
Today I’ll be looking at the various Omega-3 benefits when it comes to building muscle and burning fat.
You see, the fatty acids found in fish have been consumed by bodybuilders and explosive strength athletes for many years due to their effectiveness for boosting our immune system and increasing our recovery from intense exercise.
They may be boring, but sometimes boring just plain works!
Know Your Omega-3 Benefits
Thinking back to my childhood, I can still hear my mother say this:
“Eat your fish – it will make you brainy.”
Back then, of course, I thought she was an evil demi-god, sent to Earth to punish me for being such a cool teenager.
Of course, she was bang on the money.
But while the mental effects of Omega-3 are well documented, getting a good supply of our wet friend can also help you get brawny.
Because nobody just wants the brains, right?
In 2011, researchers from Washington University School of Medicine performed an 8 week study comparing the effects of regular Omega-3 supplementation at 4 grams per day versus a placebo group, to see if it improved physical results in young adults the same way it does for the elderly.
They discovered that all subjects who consumed Omega-3 supplements experienced a greater anabolic response to insulin as well as improved protein synthesis (muscle building). (1)
You see, using fish oil will take on a raft of other jobs which other supplements completely miss.
Instead, it’ll look after your immune system and tackle the dull but necessary jobs that your flashier, more expensive supplements cannot do.
So fuck you, supplement industry, for burying this ace product.
And, for the record, have you ever seen Mr. Bean without his shirt anyway?
So eat your fish!
Or at the very least, consume your Omega-3 supplements. For those who are unsure which one to get, this is the one I use.
The gains you’ll experience from them are anything but dull.
Post Update: The media recently linked Omega-3 supplements to prostate cancer. Click here to read my input on that.
